County Information County FactsJefferson County was created on March 26, 1804 from part of Lycoming County and named for then President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Industrial development in Jefferson County has been dependent on the development of highways, availability of transportation services and labor force, and quality of life. The quality of life offered to residents is attractive to many company owners and their employees. The security of a small town lifestyle coupled with exceptional school systems, and a wide range of recreational opportunities is very appealing. Interstate 80 serves as the primary link between Jefferson County and major markets. I-80 extends from New York City in the east to major markets in the Midwest and West. Jefferson County is also accessible to Routs 28, 219, 36 and Interstate 79. The DuBois-Jefferson County Airport, located in the northern quadrant of the county and the Punxsutawney municipal Airport located in southern Jefferson County provide local air transportation.
